A WPS file is considered a text document from Microsoft Works Word Processor (the predecessor of Microsoft Word). This file resembles a Word document (.DOC), but WPS files do not contain some of the advanced formatting features that a Word document has. They also do not contain any macros.

About 40 years ago, users used the word processor Microsoft Works to create essays, letters, invitations, financial statements, resumes, newsletters, and more. Such documents were given a WPS file format when they were saved. Microsoft Word's DOC later replaced this format.
The WPS format ceased to exist in 2006.
