Several ranges of bits can be contained in the TGA format — 8, 16, 24, and 32 bits. Each color of an image is defined using a palette. Each pixel of an image is characterized by a certain number of bits, depending on the color depth. This is why TGA files are pretty large data sets. But due to efficient lossless sequential coding, the file can be compressed and thus significantly reduced in size.
